Chapter Seven
Something metallic clicked inside a fading dream and left Chase staring at the inside of her eyelids. She took a deep breath but fought the urge to stretch. Stretching meant moving and moving meant getting up so she was more than happy to remain horizontal. If she was lucky, she might even fall back asleep.
Spending her morning sprawled out in a king bed with nothing to do was an unusual luxury. One that Chase was blissful to wallow in for as long as she could get away with. At that moment in time not a single muscle ached or body part hurt. Her abused joints were thrilled to forget they were mobile creatures whose job was to animate the tired human they strung together. It was blissful, beautiful comfort and if she could somehow meld herself to the mattress beneath her and pretend to be a throw pillow for a few more hours, she would gladly do so…except for an elusive thought that kept prickling at her with all the insistence of an escaped down feather poking at her brain. She was forgetting something and for the life of her, she couldn’t remember what it was.
A lethargic sigh slipped past her tongue, the slow exhale of a sunning snake. There was no getting around it, she was going to have to wake up. Then her brain would work better and maybe, just maybe, it would give up the missing information. Or, she thought, I could wake Rowan up and she could tell me.
Still loathing to move any more than necessary, Chase flung one arm out behind her. Her fingertips slipped across a cool, wrinkled patch of sheets. Despite the high thread count, the crisp linen didn’t deserve the loving caress meant for warm skin.
She sat straight up. “Rowan?” she called out. There was no answer. “Well, Hell,” she muttered and tossed off the blankets.
Morning hair was dealt with easily, just a quick finger combing and that was it. Rowan hadn’t been exactly thrilled when she decided to lop off the long ponytail, but the new style was simple and easy to take care of as long as she remembered to wear a hat. Her hair wasn’t quite as light as it used to be, but she still burned. Both knee’s popped when she stood up as well as her left shoulder. She rolled her neck and tried not to think about her age. Horses were rough on the body, and after years in the saddle, she doubted she was worth much on trade-in anymore. It’s a good thing Rowan doesn’t seem to mind. Hell, she’s even willing to go full in on the long haul with me.
First stop was the bathroom. It was empty, but she wasn’t, so she was forced to sit and wait a little longer before continuing her search. It was pretty obvious she was alone in the hotel room so she headed for the door, pausing just long enough to toss on her jeans and a t-shirt.
